Learning common collocates of academic words is important because it helps you with your choice of words when you are writing and gives your writing a better sense of flow. Learning collocations takes time and requires a lot of reading, but you can speed this process up by learning common collocates as you come across new words or through systematic vocabulary study. The collocation quizzes below can help with this process. All the headwords in these quizzes are from the AWLAcademic Word List, the NAWLNew Academic Word List, the AKLAcademic Keyword List, or the OPALThe Oxford Phrasal Academic Lexicon. Many of the collocates are also in these lists so these quizzes help you to become familiar with these words. The collocation quizzes presented here can also be found on the Academic Word of the Day page, with a few modifications. They are presented together here for ease of access. Each quiz is numbered by the set which contains headwords in the quiz: Set 1A and Set 1B contain headwords from the Academic Word of the Day page Set 1. All quizzes contain at least three headwords from the numbered set; most quizzes contain at least four. Not all sets have two quizzes (because not all words have strong collocates or because some words in a set are tested elsewhere).
The items in each quiz are presented in random order, as are the collocates for each headword, so if you repeat the quiz you are highly unlikely to see the items in the same order. Once you have completed a quiz you will have a record of this stating when you completed it.
